Propylene Glycol

USP Grade
(United States Pharmacopeia)
Propylene glycol is a light, transparent liquid, almost odorless and with low volatility. It is completely soluble in water and in most organic solvents.
In addition, all propylene glycols have a great capacity to hold and dissolve active ingredients equally which allows them to serve as carriers of aromas, flavors, dyes and moisture.
Propylene glycols, thanks to their excellent properties and quality, are present in areas as varied as personal care, cosmetics, food and pharmaceuticals.
Its use must follow strict specifications for quality as laid out in the USP- United States Pharmacopeia.
Propylene glycol USP is qualified and approved for use as an excipient in pharmaceutical applications, as it acts as a solvent and extractant for a wide range of active ingredients besides its dispersant capacity that provides equal distribution of the medicine ingredient in the formulation.
Its wide range of applications includes medicines, local anesthetics, vitamins and hormones, antiseptics, and vaccines.
Propylene glycol USP grade is the only grade appropriate for application in food.
As propylene glycol USP grade is color-, taste- and odorless, it has become the perfect carrier of flavors of a wide variety of food commonly used in our day a day.
Propylene glycol USP grade is approved for use as a food additive under E-number E 1520 (with strict maximum limit of 1 g/kg in human foodstuffs).
Direct food contact uses include:
• Solvent and carrier for flavor and color in food and beverage manufacturing processes, for drinks, biscuits, cakes, sweets…
• Thickener, clarifier and stabilizer in food and beverage such as beer, salad dressings or baking mixtures.
Propylene glycol USP grade is also used in animal feed because of its inherent property of attracting water, helping to keep the feedstuffs moist, fresh and chewy, making them easier to digest for our dogs and also for livestock.
Applications of propylene glycol USP grade as feed additive (E 490) include its use as:
• Humectant to provide moisture and taste.
• Solvent, stabilizer and preservative to keep the feed suitable for longer use.
• Additive for increased energy provision.Propylene glycol is a light, transparent liquid, almost odorless and with low volatility. It is completely soluble in water and in most organic solvents.
